Ultimate NC Mountains-to-Coast Road Trip

The definitive North Carolina road trip — starting in Asheville's Blue Ridge highlands and finishing with your toes in the Outer Banks sand. This 7-day route crosses all three NC regions and hits the greatest hits.

Day 1–2: Asheville + Biltmore

Day 3: Blue Ridge Parkway Drive

Day 4: Chapel Hill / Durham

Day 5: Raleigh

Day 6–7: Outer Banks

Day 1–2 (Asheville): Arrive in Asheville. Spend Day 1 at the Biltmore Estate (book tickets in advance). Day 2: River Arts District, lunch downtown, craft beer tour in the evening.

Day 3 (Blue Ridge Parkway): Drive the parkway south from Asheville toward Boone. Stop at Graveyard Fields waterfall, Rough Ridge and the Linn Cove Viaduct. Overnight in Boone — walk the App State campus.

Day 4 (Durham/Chapel Hill): Morning: Sarah P. Duke Gardens + Duke Chapel. Afternoon: UNC's Old Well, Morehead Planetarium. Evening: Durham food scene.

Day 5 (Raleigh): NC Museum of Natural Sciences (free), NC State's Memorial Bell Tower, Transfer Co. Food Hall dinner.

Day 6–7 (Outer Banks): Drive to the OBX (3 hrs from Raleigh). Day 6: Kill Devil Hills, Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockey's Ridge. Day 7: Drive south to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse before heading home.

Research Triangle Weekend: Campuses, Culture & Food

A long weekend in the Research Triangle — visiting Duke, UNC and NC State, plus world-class museums and some of the South's best restaurants. Perfect for prospective students, alumni or cultural travelers.

Day 1: Durham + Duke

Day 2: Chapel Hill + UNC

Day 3: Raleigh + NC State

Day 1 (Durham): Morning at Sarah P. Duke Gardens and Duke Chapel. Lunch at The Durham Hotel's restaurant. Afternoon at the American Tobacco Campus and Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Evening: Raleigh food hall or downtown Durham bars.

Day 2 (Chapel Hill): Walk the UNC campus — Old Well, South Building, Polk Place. Visit Ackland Art Museum (free). Lunch on Franklin Street. Afternoon: Morehead Planetarium show. Head to Raleigh for dinner.

NC College Road Trip Circuit

For prospective students, families, or anyone who loves campus architecture, gardens and college-town culture. This 4–5 day circuit covers NC's most visitor-worthy campuses from the Triangle to the mountains.

Day 1: Duke + Durham

Day 2: UNC + Elon

Day 3: Wake Forest + Winston-Salem

Day 4–5: App State + Boone

Day 1 (Duke): Duke Gardens, Chapel, Nasher Museum. Overnight Durham.
Day 2 (UNC + Elon): UNC Chapel Hill morning. Drive to Elon University (45 min) for arboretum walk. Overnight Greensboro/Burlington.
Day 3 (Wake Forest): Wake Forest campus, Reynolda Gardens, Old Salem Living History Museum. Overnight Winston-Salem.
Day 4–5 (App State): Drive to Boone (1.5 hrs). App State campus + Turchin Center. Blue Ridge Parkway hike. Enjoy Boone's college-town dining and craft beer. Return via Asheville.

The perfect family coastal adventure — history, wildlife, beaches and lighthouses. Great for kids of all ages, with something new at every stop.

Day 1: Corolla Wild Horses Tour

Day 2: Kill Devil Hills + Wright Bros

Day 3: Hatteras Lighthouse

Day 4: Ferry to Ocracoke

Day 1 (Corolla): Book a 4WD wild horse tour (guided, 2 hrs). Swim at Corolla Light beach. Sunset from the Currituck Beach Lighthouse (open seasonally).
Day 2 (Kill Devil Hills): Wright Brothers National Memorial morning. Afternoon at Jockey's Ridge State Park — sandboarding, kite flying, sunset views. Dinner at Sam & Omie's (Nags Head since 1937).
Day 3 (Hatteras): Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Climb the Hatteras Lighthouse (Apr–Oct; timed entry tickets). Beach afternoon. Sea turtle programs in summer.
Day 4 (Ocracoke — optional): Ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island (free, 1 hr). Walk the village, visit the oldest operating lighthouse in NC (1823). Ferry back or continue south.

When to Visit

NC Seasonal Travel Guide

🌸 Spring (Mar–May)

The best time for campus visits — azaleas and cherry blossoms peak at Duke Gardens and UNC in April. Blue Ridge wildflowers bloom in May. Temperatures are mild across all regions.

✓ Outer Banks spring break: less crowded, cheaper

☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug)

Peak beach season on the coast. Mountains offer cool relief from summer heat. Asheville and Boone are very popular — book accommodations early. Hurricane awareness required for coastal travel.

🍂 Fall (Sep–Nov)

The most popular season for good reason. Blue Ridge foliage peaks mid-to-late October. ACC football creates incredible campus energy. Asheville's beer and harvest festivals. Ideal temperatures throughout.

❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb)

The quiet season has its own magic. Biltmore at Christmas is spectacular. Ski season opens in the High Country. Coast is peaceful and uncrowded. University admissions offices are less busy — easier campus tour access.

Getting Around NC

A car is almost essential for most of NC — the mountains especially require driving. The Triangle has good light rail (Raleigh) and extensive bus networks. Charlotte has LYNX light rail. Asheville is walkable once you're there.

Where to Stay

Asheville has boutique hotels and mountain B&Bs; the Triangle has plentiful hotels near the universities; OBX offers beach rental houses for families. Book 3–6 months ahead for fall foliage season and summer beach weeks.

Safety Notes

Always check NOAA weather for coastal trips (hurricane season: Jun–Nov). Check road conditions before mountain drives in winter. Rip currents are the #1 beach danger — swim only near lifeguards.
