Uwharrie National Forest
One of the country's smallest but most geologically interesting national forests — ancient 500-million-year-old rocks, OHV trails and swimming holes in the heart of the Piedmont.
Ocracoke Island, OBX
Accessible only by ferry, this tiny island village has preserved a unique 400-year-old "Outer Banks brogue" dialect. One of the most authentic and unhurried spots in NC.
Museum of the Alphabet, Waxhaw
A quirky and genuinely fascinating museum dedicated to written language worldwide — operated by Wycliffe Bible Translators. Free admission and surprisingly engaging.
Brevard Music Center
Every summer, this mountain campus near Asheville hosts world-class classical music performances in an open-air pavilion surrounded by forest. Tickets are often very affordable.
Chimney Rock State Park
A massive granite monolith rising 315 feet above the valley floor. Hike to the top for stunning views of Hickory Nut Falls and Lake Lure. Featured in "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992).
Grandfather Mountain
One of the most biologically diverse areas in the Eastern US. The Mile High Swinging Bridge offers dramatic views and is perfect for families. Grandfather Mountain Hiking Challenge is a rite of passage.
